So I have been blogging over a year now and thought I’d make a dedicated post about a step-by-step guide on how to start a self-care blog, the best blogging platform among bloggers and how to avoid some common blogging mistakes made by beginners.
With that being said, It’s only fair to let you know that this is not my first blog and that is why I am confident to share these tips with you. I’ve made all the mistakes in the past so you don’t have to.
Follow these tips below and be on your way to creating a successful blog that you can generate income from.
Important Features Of A Successful Blog
This post applies to any blog niches out there but just to stay on topic. I will be talking about starting a self-care blog. A self-care blog is primarily under a lifestyle blog niche and is popularly found among other niches like personal development and/or self-improvement.
The differences between these 3 topics aren’t always clear so you find a lot of blogs with these three topics just like mine.
You want your blog to have focus, that is what your core content is but you can also include other topics to your blog. Just make sure these topics are not opposites. For example, some of my self-care audience is also interested in beauty posts. Beauty is also a part of self-care.
I find that if you have a self-care/self-improvement blog adding supporting content increases your monetization chances because this niche is not one of the easiest to monetize.
Very crucial. That’s your first impression in the blogosphere. I think it is important to come up with something with a ring to it, fun and catchy. Your blog name shouldn’t be too long, my recommendation is three words max.
I recommend using your name in the case you are finding it hard to come up with a name. Plus, you can never outgrow your name but it is likely you outgrow a random name.
Here’s another tip for blogs within this niche. You can use a combination of positive and uplifting words. For example, Life With Amy, The Journey Within, Transformation Of Self, etc. They’re simple and it’s brandable.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and go with WordPress. Bloggers who make many uses this platform. WordPress is an online, open-source website creation tool written in PHP. But in a less techy term, it’s the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS) in existence today.
You’re in good company if you use WordPress to publish on the web. Many famous blogs, news outlets, music sites, Fortune 500 companies, and celebrity websites are all using WordPress.
There is a free version and a paid version of WordPress. Both are fine if you just want to get your content out there, but if you want to make money, you can only do that on the paid version (WordPress.org).
You are not allowed to have display ads on the free version and have no access to the best plugins that make your blog user-friendly and grow.
To use the paid version of WordPress, you need to be registered with a hosting company. This is what you pay for, not the WordPress itself.
You want to start your blog as self-hosted. Skip the hurdles of starting on a free platform that will later not match your growth.
Transferring your blog later can be difficult, you can even lose your readers. I started on Blogger but I found it limiting in blog design and functionality. It is not that great for SEO (search engine optimization) especially when you are a beginner and trying to figure things out.
My hosting company recommendation is SiteGround starting at less than $4 per month, literally $49 for a whole year. This company is great for beginner bloggers. Great support, fast website, affordable, great functionality and a chance of improved rankings in Google via free downloadable plugins.
I rank better, my website is faster and it comes with a free SSL certificate too. Web security is a priority!
Theme/ Blog Design
Because you are a beginner blogger doesn’t mean your blog has to look unprofessional. A beautiful and clean blog helps in attracting and keeping your readers.
A good theme is not too busy, too colorful and should be easy to navigate your way around. You want your readers to easily find your menu, posts and easily comment if they want to.
A professional-looking blog also attracts brands and increases your chances of getting sponsored offers.
Producing Relevant Content
I am guessing you have an idea of what kind of content you want to create for your niche. The most important thing is to be consistent. Consistency leads to growth. That’s how you get better and that’s how you grow your audience.
In being consistent, also try to make sure you are creating valuable content. With blogging, it’s not about the quantity, it’s the quality that counts.
Write content that people are searching for and be a problem-solver. Use Pinterest and Google to figure these out.
